OUR STORY
Soccer Unity Project harnesses the power of soccer to develop the next generation of leaders and strengthen connections across our global city. We are committed to providing equitable, inclusive, and unifying soccer programs and events in the City of Boston, expanding access and opportunity for all. We believe every child - regardless of background, identity, or ability - should have the chance to play the game and benefit from its lifelong developmental, social, and health impacts. Through youth programs and signature events such as the Boston Unity Cup, we create welcoming spaces where people can come as they are, celebrate a shared love of soccer, and build bridges across differences. Together, we use the game to address inequity, reduce polarization, foster belonging, and strengthen community.
How do we do this?
-
Founded in 2008, the organization launched free soccer programming for youth on fields in Boston’s Roxbury and South End neighborhoods. What began as a neighborhood initiative has grown into a citywide effort, now serving young people from more than 25 ZIP codes and over 100 schools through accessible, inclusive programs.
-
Launched in 2018, the Boston Unity Cup, a citywide celebration that brings together the many cultures, ethnicities, and immigrant communities that make Boston a global city. The tournament fosters connection, understanding, and camaraderie across communities and has grown into one of the largest soccer tournaments and most culturally diverse events in Boston.
-
Following a two-year strategic planning process, the organization rebranded as Soccer Unity Project in 2022, uniting South End Soccer, the Boston Unity Cup, and other initiatives under a single mission-driven organization. The rebrand reflected a deeper commitment to leveraging soccer as a tool for social impact, community building, and opportunity creation.
-
In 2023, Soccer Unity Project launched its workforce development program to provide teens and young adults with paid opportunities in coaching and event management. The program also offers professional development, career exploration, and leadership training, equipping participants with the skills, experiences, and confidence needed for future success.
-
In 2024, the organization relaunched TOPSoccer and partnered with Special Olympics to establish Boston’s first community-based Unified soccer team, expanding opportunities for athletes of all abilities to participate in the game. Today, Soccer Unity Project continues to grow its adaptive soccer programming and partnerships, advancing its vision of truly making “Soccer for All” a reality.

OUR VISION
Our soccer pitch is an inclusive space for individuals to come as they are, sharing in the love of the game and collective power of play.

We see soccer as a powerful tool that can be used to bring together our global city and shift our history of inequity, polarization, disconnection and bias across race, ethnicity, age, income, and industry. We work to change the culture of youth soccer from a pay-to-play model with a history of systematic racism and gender inequality to one that welcomes and develops urban youth regardless of background or experience.
